Par-ci par-là — Here and there

While I only dream of going from bed to armchair, from armchair to sofa and from sofa to bed, Paul encourages me to take a minimum of exercise. So we take a few steps on the Viarhona and I try to answer the question: how to twist trees that grow straight?

The trees have taken off their coat of foliage.

Jérôme left Paris for a short stay with us. Where he even met Dom and his little family, they had not seen each other for a while.

We had not yet introduced the village of Izieu to Jérôme. Worried about my abilities at the time, I was able to follow the movement and walk without difficulty. That day it was Paul who was in charge of the Canon.

I particularly like this bubbling water.

Euh…
The next day, Jérôme discovers our usual walk in Courtenay. No birds that day on the Etang de Salette. Uh…

I had already published the photo of a panel in the middle of the forest announcing video surveillance, let’s change a little.

This structure, vertical, horizontal posts, fine mesh, is a corn crib. It used to be used to dry corn « dolls », now the harvester separates the kernels from the cob and the cribs are gone. This one is slowly devoured by a tree.

Elsewhere another tree eats the barbed wire, woe to him who strikes a chainsaw without knowing.

Dommage.
It’s only after having framed the church of Courtenay and the Alps that I also see the ugly electric pole… Too bad.

Others than us have cleared the road blocked by the fall of a tree. This small wooded area is not maintained.

Cabarete

Charbinat janvier 2004

Michel Bühler has not recovered from the assassination of his friend Yvan Leyvraz by the « Contras » in 1986. Michel will drag his blues to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. He drinks, smokes and sometimes goes for walks. The book « Cabarete » is strangely constructed: suddenly you find yourself in Switzerland or in an African country. To return stubbornly to Cabarete where he draws hyper realistic portraits of his entourage, friends, tourists who arrive from Germany pale and leave tanned…

This book begins at nine o’clock, first chapter, and ends at midnight, last chapter. It is made up of the wanderings of this day, during which Michel abandons himself to an often sad daydream where memories flow in the greatest disorder. The common thread is the succession of hours during this day, but it is difficult to follow it with the innumerable interferences of the innumerable memories: my advice, do not follow it. Surrender to this beautiful writing all in restraint.

Thus, this day is also the balance sheet of a life at its half, after a long fight of solidarity alongside the oppressed. No screaming revolt, no snap judgement, not even real bitterness for the « charter adventurers » or the repentant sixty-eighters of the Pianissimo. Diffused throughout the book, and all the stronger, is a sense of brotherhood in despair that perhaps saves from despair.

This text is not just a story: in an interview, Bübu made the sad observation, his youth already far behind him, of the increase in poverty for some and that of wealth for others – we have everything failed, he said, since it could have happened. It’s a subject that comes up constantly in his writings, in his words: Michel wouldn’t like me to say « he was a committed man », I don’t know how to formulate what he did in his life, guided by his beliefs. They appear on every page of his novel.

He deplores « the religion of money, always more and each for himself, each working on his side for his unique comfort.
I have nostalgia for the time when we believed that love, solidarity, could change the world. »

Now that I have cut the paragraph into small sections, I return it to you in its entirety, for the beauty of the writing, for the humanism that emerges from it.
What will we be left with now? The religion of money, always more and each for himself, each in his own bubble. It’s already, on our side of the planet, who will have the best tan, who will find the best price to go as far as possible. Like those horses just now towards the point, suddenly returning to a raw instinct, we gallop breathlessly to be the first, and we no longer see the sea, nor the white bird which lets itself be carried by the wind. We will become ants, with nothing that transcends us, bees put together by chance in a hive, each working on its own for its unique comfort.
I have nostalgia for the time when we believed that love, solidarity, could change the world.
We will only have before our eyes an opulent America, which does not exist. The poor who pile into cardboard shacks, to persist in hoping, will dream of motels in the greenery, of Cadillacs parked in front of colonnaded villas from which come out rare blond children fed on corn flakes.
In the end, they only have God or the Lotto.
What will happen when we wake up realizing that liberalism has deceived us too?

Michel Bühler worries about our dehumanization. It appears in this beautiful song, « si le temps », « if the time », « Where the deafened man as if drunk / from his battle to survive / no longer knows how to greet the flowers »… I find exactly the same idea here: « we no longer see the sea, nor the white bird that lets itself be carried by the wind (…) without anything that transcends us. »

I was struck rather hard by this question:
What will happen when we wake up realizing that liberalism too has deceived us?
Libéralism is far from having only attractions for me for a very long time ! However, the majority of people, and probably in the majority of countries on the planet, act in the direction of this dogma, willingly or by force. Yes, but if deep awareness does eventually occur, what will actually happen? That’s a question that can lead to long sleepless nights!

Jacques-Étienne Bovard finds his « statement of oppression and triumphant stupidity in the world rather bitter. » But for Michel, the balance sheet of his travels is not there. « Because I have often been able to find the authenticity of beings and avoid tourist circuits… That said, it’s true that I have the feeling that now there are no great hopes and that people live in the day by day to earn money and make a career. But I think the man deserves better than that. »

Covid has drained me of all my energy. I spent days and days sleeping. The hardest thing was to get out of bed, and from that moment only one thought, to go back there. After all these days of absence, daydreaming, sleeping at all hours of the day and night, I was able to start reading again. « Cabarete » wasn’t easy to get into, then I dove into it with delight. From the bottom of my armchair I accompanied Bübu in his wanderings. It was the two of us who would do the least. At the same time, on each page, the reader catches one of his ideas which are beautiful: « The values to which I am attached are those of humanism. I believe in man, in the good part that there is in man. »
This is easily felt throughout these pages.

Bübu accompanied me to gradually get out of my lethargy.
Special mention for the last page in which he quotes Yvan Leyvraz one last time. About the Contras, those who will be his assassins, Yvan says:
« Most of them are poor people, forcibly taken from their villages. They threaten them, they promise to massacre their families if they do not obey. Sometimes those people sign up voluntarily, for twenty dollars, for a machete. »
A sort of loop is closed on the last page of this novel.

I have a huge regret: that Bübu left us, of course. Not only. I should have read his « Cabarete » much earlier, written this column a long time ago, so I could have written to him inviting him to read me. He had always responded very kindly to the few messages I sent him, I hope he would have enjoyed my reading of his book.

I repeat his words to myself, like a mantra: man deserves better than this.
I’ll leave the final word to him (I wish I had said it myself!). When asked if he believed in God, he replied:
« I do not know. There may be someone up there, but I haven’t spoken to him for a long time. We don’t agree, it would end in a fight and I don’t like that… »

« C’est si bon… »

Some time after the memorable concert by Martine, Riton and Alex, I went to confide my great fatigue to the doctor, but he found nothing. A few more days and I was covid positive. Between morning naps, afternoon naps, and long nighttime sleep sessions, I still mailed you my « Sherlock Holmes » that I wasn’t happy with. But it was this or nothing, and I was already planning « nothing » for the following week. However, the perfect method to lose your readership all at once is to stop publishing.

I have therefore carefully examined the calendar, trying to anticipate an improvement in my health, but it takes time before coming.

givre janvier 22 — frost january 22

I have often mentioned in these pages dear friends who left the region several years ago: Jacky and Maguy, Ariane and Renato, Edith and Roland. We often met, or when they passed by here we offered them coffee. We would eat at each other’s houses. We went for walks…

And then Maguy’s daughter got her transfer in the south where her other children live, that’s how Maguy and Jacky left the region. Ariane has always dreamed of the sea: as soon as it was possible, Ariane and Renato went to La-Ciotat. As for Edith and Roland, they divide their time between Uruguay, Paraguay and France.

In this difficult period of the arrival of the cold and the fatigue to eliminate, a great sunburn brightened up our somewhat gloomy days: we received a card from Jacky and Maguy and a visit from Ariane and Renato, passing through the region. Just when we were no longer contaminating! And now Edith and Roland come by to say hello without warning, one day when we are out for a walk! We look forward to the opportunity to see them again and exchange news.

Three weeks after Martine, Riton and Alex’s concert, we are opening our dining room again for Lolo and Nanath’s « c’est si bon » show. Quentin comes to record the evening so that Lolo and Nanath can finally make themselves known with a quality document. Long preparations, with the microphones, then with the lighting…

Lolo and Nanath are part of Alfred’s marching band which is in the audience with many other participants in this marching band. The luthier Jérôme is there too, come to listen to « his » guitar in the hands of Lolo.
Portuguese, English, sometimes French, their concert goes from jazz to bossa without forgetting « le blues du Charbinat », ah ah, tailor-made. They include recreations drawn at random by the public. Opportunity to serve us the famous song of the twin sisters, from the musical comedy « les demoiselles de Rochefort ». By clicking on this link, you will find the story of this song and its text which they have taken over in full.

Thanks to both of you for putting the lavish wigs back on the next day, just for the picture. In principle, you turn your back to put them on your skulls, yet in the future you could perhaps force the line by adjusting them under our eyes?

Most often Nathalie sings alone, how can I put it, she has exactly the right voice, her interpretations are a real pleasure. Lolo sings less often, I really like his voice. You guess we laughed a lot during this show. We also appreciated the quality of the interpretations, and each song is listened to in complete silence.

Do we need a spectator on stage? Marie-Rose offers herself. Lolo is a fan of the simplest technological objects, Marie-Rose will scroll the text of « Armstrong » so that we can all sing along. A pleasure, this beautiful song.

Nanath is a poly-instrumentalist, she manages to play the flute and sing at the same time. I won’t tell you how.

« C’est fini ! » annonce Lolo.
« It’s finish ! » Lolo announces. In fact, it’s time to perform their favorite song, « c’est si bon ». Failing to make you listen to the interpretation of Lolo and Nanath (Quentin must work on the rushes), you can listen to it sung by Yves Montand or Louis Armstrong

Great commotion, Alfred, Jacques, Päivi, Paul and I join our singers on stage: it was a secret clause of the contract, Lolo and Nanath absolutely wanted a finale with us. So this will be « le tourbillon de la vie » « the whirlwind of life », one of the songs I find most comfortable singing – but my voice is still scratchy.

As always, we had an amazing evening. As always, we put the table back in the middle of the dining room, everyone has brought a « something » and we eat while chatting. Some do not stay, too tired or to avoid the risk of contamination. Paul and I are perfectly serene on this side!
