En juin, à deux reprises, j’ai vu deux vers luisants. Comme l’éclairage d’un led, mais en naturel. Quel plaisir de discerner cette jolie lumière à moitié cachée dans les herbes ! J’ai posé à proximité les neuf escargots trouvés en train de dévorer l’aloé vera, en espérant que les lampyres les trouveront, car ils en font une grande consommation. L’intense pollution lumineuse généré par les humains serait une cause de la raréfaction des vers luisants, je compense comme je peux.
In June, on two occasions, I saw two glow worms. Like the lighting of an LED, but natural. What a pleasure to discern this pretty light half hidden in the grass! I have placed the nine snails found devouring aloe vera nearby, hoping that the glow worms will find them because they consume a lot of them. The intense light pollution generated by humans would be a cause of the scarcity of glow worms, I compensate as I can.

La prochaine fois que nous irons pique-niquer au fond du jardin, nous y transporterons cafetière et café, en plus du déménagement habituel (car c’est un pique-nique à l’ancienne, avec vaisselle et tout ce qu’il faut, la grosse brouette y suffit à peine, il ne manque que les cristaux et les nappes brodées !).

Maudit confinement, je n’ai pas revu mon père pendant quatre mois. Je lui fais une visite éclair fin juin : en ma présence il met son masque, et pour manger nous nous décalons. Malgré les barrières (encore ?) nécessaires, il est content de me voir.

Pendant que je suis dans le midi, je propose à ma sœur de découvrir les Fosses de Fournès, à deux pas de Remoulins. Mon père préfère éviter l’aventure. Avant d’arriver à Fournès, nous faisons une pause au milieu des vignes. Quand je fais demi-tour, comme je n’ai pas remarqué le léger talus, j’y pose la voiture qui est très basse : je le savais, mais je n’avais jamais eu de problème jusqu’à présent. Les roues n’ont aucune prise et tournent sans faire bouger le véhicule.
While I am in the south, I suggest to my sister to discover the Fosses de Fournès, a stone’s throw from Remoulins. My father prefers to avoid adventure. Before arriving in Fournès, we take a break among the vineyards. When I turn around, as I haven’t noticed the slight slope, I put the car there, which is very low: I knew it, but I had never had a problem until now. The wheels have no grip and turn without moving the vehicle.

Impossible de manœuvrer, inutile d’appeler les copains, nous sommes seules et loin de tout : je ne tarde pas à faire appel à MAIF assistance. Le problème, c’est que nous ne savons pas précisément où nous sommes. Mon interlocutrice propose de m’envoyer un lien pour nous situer, mais je n’ai qu’un téléphone portable très simple, un outil préhistorique sur lequel on grave les messages sur le marbre avec un burin et un marteau. En tout cas, je ne suis pas connectée au grand réseau mondial. Et puis quoi encore !
Impossible to maneuver, useless to call the friends, we are alone and far from everything: I don’t hesitate to call MAIF assistance (insurance help). The problem is, we don’t know exactly where we are. My interlocutor offers to send me a link to locate us, but I only have a very simple mobile phone, a prehistoric tool on which we engrave messages on marble with a chisel and hammer. In any case, I am not connected to the large global network. What next !

Finalement, comme il y a un rond-point à deux cent mètres, je pique un sprint au milieu des vignes pour relever le numéro des départementales. Le dépanneur, contacté, m’appelle et me demande si je suis passée decvant la caserne des pompiers. Ah, ce bâtiment là-bas… avec un téléphone peint sur la façade, et le numéro 112…
Finally, as there is a roundabout at two hundred meters, I sprint in the middle of the vines to note the number of the departmental roads. Contacted, the repairman calls me and asks me if I went past the fire station. Ah, that building over there… with a telephone painted on the facade, and the number 112 (emergency number)…

Le téléphone bipe l’approche de notre sauveur, qui finit par arriver en vrai et nous tire de ce mauvais pas en quelques minutes.

Sauvées ! Nous avons été servies comme des reines, mon interlocutrice au téléphone et le dépanneur ont été au top, et c’est comme ça que nous réussissons finalement à atteindre les Fosses de Fournès.

Je prends un petit chemin de terre, une habitude chez moi. Appeler les secours deux fois dans la journée, ça poserait certainement un problème. Je fais doublement attention mais tous les petits chemins ne sont pas vicieux et je pourrai faire demi-tour en toute sérénité le moment venu.
I take a small dirt road, a habit for me. Calling help twice a day would certainly be a problem. I am doubly careful but all the small paths are not vicious and I will be able to turn around in all serenity when the time comes.

Il fait beaucoup trop chaud et pour toute exploration, nous cherchons un coin à l’ombre : en effet, j’ai commencé à donner un cours de tricot à ma sœur quand on attendait le dépanneur, alors on termine tranquillement. Pendant que le chant des cigales couvre celui des guêpiers.
It’s way too hot and we are looking for a place in the shade as any exploration: indeed, I started giving my sister a knitting lesson when we were waiting for the repairman, so we finish quietly. While the song of the cicadas covers that of the bee-eaters.

C’est tellement beau les torsades ! J’en ai des fourmis dans les doigts, des envies de tricoter moi aussi.

Mais je dois retrouver mon père et j’ai un peu de route à faire. La circulation est  dense, c’est dimanche, et si nous n’avons vu personne à Fournès, au bord du Gardon c’est autre chose. En voyant toute cette viande en train de griller, je me demande combien finiront la journée aux urgences.
But I have to go to my father’s house and I have to drive for a while. Traffic is  dense, it’s Sunday, and if we haven’t seen anyone in Fournès, on the banks of the Gardon, it’s something else. Seeing all this meat grilling, I wonder how many will end the day in the emergency room.

Et je me demande aussi si la dame couchée au soleil est aussi nue qu’elle en a l’air. Alors je vérifie, oui, ce n’est pas très respectueux, je m’approche avec l’œil très indiscret de mon Canon. Elle est décemment vêtue en réalité, et je me perds dans de profondes réflexions philosophiques : à partir de quelle trop petite surface de tissu peut-on parler d’indécence ?
And I also wonder if the lady lying in the sun is as naked as she looks. So I check, yes, it’s not very respectful, I approach with the very prying eye of my Canon. She is decently dressed in reality, and I get lost in deep philosophical reflections: from what too small area of fabric can we speak of indecency?

Cette dame ne me dérange pas du tout, et tant mieux pour elle si elle se sent bien avec ce maillot de bain. Et s’il y a du souci à se faire, c’est sans doute pour l’homme à ses côtés qui est en train de prendre un peu trop de couleur.

Le monsieur à qui nous achetons des cerises à l’une des innombrables boutiques de bord de route est satisfait. Après le confinement tout le monde a envie de rattraper le temps perdu.

Je finis par arriver chez mon père. Son voisin immédiat côté nord a construit une villa impersonnelle avec pelouse, alors que de notre côté, il y a une incroyable diversité végétale. Une prairie. Papa ne peut plus jardiner, il y voit si mal, mais l’oseille est toujours là, la même que la mienne, celle dont je vous disais, le 21 avril, qu’elle a soixante-dix ans. La floraison des cardons est en train de passer, celle des néfliers est opulente. C’est le début de la saison des figues, certaines sont déjà dévorées par les insectes. Le baguenaudier a produit ses drôles de graines.
I end up arriving at my father’s house. His closest neighbor on the north side has built an impersonal villa with lawn, while on our side there is an incredible plant diversity. A meadow. Dad can no longer garden, he sees so badly, but the sorrel is still there, the same as mine, the one I told you on April 21, that it is seventy years old. The flowering of the cardoons is passing, that of the medlar trees is opulent. It’s the beginning of the fig season, some are already eaten by insects. The baguenaudier (Colutea arborescens) produced its funny seeds.

Chez nous il y a deux plants d’acanthe, ici je n’en connais pas le nombre…

La nuit tombe. Je me sens chez moi dans cette maison où je n’ai jamais vécu, puisque je vivais déjà avec paul quand mes parents ont fait construire leur maison.
