Il a poussé tout seul à la limite de notre terrain. Il m’a appris à peu près tout ce que je sais sur les noyers. Qu’ils ont des feuilles tard au printemps, des bourgeons qui s’ouvrent quand les autres espèces sont déjà passées au vert :

Notre terrain a bien plu à notre invité inattendu. Il a grandi et prospéré. Nous avons fait de belles récoltes de noix, vertes, à la St-Jean, pour le vin de noix, ou, à l’automne, concurrencés par les corbeaux qui avaient vite fait de nous faucher notre trésor si nous tardions à le ramasser !
Our unexpected guest loved the place. It grew up and prospered. We made good harvests of walnuts, when they were green, at the St-Jean, for the wine of nuts, or, in the autumn, competed by the crows who hurried to stole our treasure if we delayed to pick it up!
J’y ai vu s’y poser un héron. Parfois les écureuils s’y poursuivaient, souvent les oiseaux plus communs y faisaient une pause, profitant de la vue panoramique.

C’était comme un ami, familier, que je regardais souvent depuis la salle à manger ou la salle de bain. Il faisait partie du paysage.

De plus en plus de branches étaient mortes, sans doute à cause de l’usage régulier du désherbant par le voisin, et aussi les labours qui, passant tout près, sectionnaient les racines de l’arbre.

L’an dernier, il était tout à fait mort, avec le bas du tronc qui déjà commençait à pourrir.

En avril, on a demandé à John de réparer la clôture (sur la photo, c’est bien le noyer dont on voit le tronc à gauche et l’ombre à droite). On savait qu’il faudrait l’abattre.

Une fois l’arbre coupé, on est heureux de voir que le bois n’est pas abimé : on va pouvoir le faire scier, fabriquer quelque chose avec, lui donner une nouvelle vie – presque l’éternité…

Peut-être que Dom’ tournera quelques belles pièces, le bois de noyer se travaille très bien, il a une très belle veine.On a pris contact avec Jean-Charles qui pratique le débardage avec un cheval.
