Avant de partir, nous avons été pris d’une frénésie de jardin — bon, c’est une image, une façon de parler pour accrocher les lecteurs… Paul remet en état le sol de ses futures cultures, Lolo donne un coup de main, il coupe coupe et coupe pour alimenter le broyeur qui va bientôt revenir, et moi parfois, j’aide aussi…

À l’automne, j’ai détruit toute la structure qui supportait les pieds de houblon : sur la photo, vous pouvez distinguer les innombrables tiges qui poussent depuis des années, elles n’avaient jamais été taillées. Et j’ai coupé les tiges en laissant une bonne longueur pour retrouver l’emplacement des pieds le moment venu.

En février, j’ai désherbé l’emplacement, et Lolo a installé une nouvelle structure posée sur deux solides supports. Les houblons n’avaient jamais été à pareille fête, leur sol nettoyé, puis recouvert de bois broyé. Pendant le travail, Bouboule le rouge-gorge nous surveillait avec intérêt et se gorgeait de lombrics.

In February, I weeded the site, and Lolo installed a new structure placed on two solid supports. The hops had never been at such a party, their soil cleaned, then covered with crushed wood. During the work, Bouboule the robin watched us with interest and gorged himself on earthworms.

Nous partons tranquillement le samedi matin, quand nous avons préparé tout ce qui servira et tout ce qui sera inutile. Nous pique-niquons dans un vent glacial, dans la montée vers le col de la Croix Haute. Il fait trop froid pour chercher une vraie balade, alors nous nous arrêtons dans Serres, un « village de caractère » disent les panneaux. Et c’est réellement un village pittoresque, dominé par un gigantesque rocher.

We leave quietly on Saturday morning, when we have prepared everything that will be useful and everything that will be useless. We picnic in an icy wind, on the climb to the Col de la Croix Haute. It’s too cold to look for a real ride, so we stop in Serres, a « village of character » say the signs. And it’s really is a picturesque village, dominated by a gigantic rock.

On se demande pourquoi il est spécifié qu’il est interdit de stationner. On peut se demander pourquoi les voitures emprunteraient une voie sans issue.

Nous reprenons la route : ça fait tout bizarre, nous étions là début décembre, et nous passons près de Ribiers où nous avions logé pendant une semaine. Tant de souvenirs nous reviennent ! Puis nous faisons une halte à Sisteron pour visiter nos magasins favoris : librairie, « biocoop » (alimentation). Enfin, nous arrivons « chez nous », et nous sommes tout de suite satisfaits : ce gîte est bien aménagé, confortable, il ne manque rien, et la propriétaire est très sympathique.

We hit the road again: it’s strange, we were there at the beginning of December, and we pass near Ribiers where we had stayed for a week. So many memories come back to us! Then we stop in Sisteron to visit our favorite stores: bookstore, « biocoop » (food). Finally, we arrive « home », and we are immediately satisfied: this cottage is well appointed, comfortable, nothing is missing, and the owner is very friendly.

En soirée (Paul n’en revient pas, ceux qui me connaissent seront surpris aussi !) je propose une partie de Scrabble. Je joue très mal mais nous passons un bon moment.

In the evening (Paul can’t believe it, those who know me will be surprised too!) I suggest playing Scrabble. I play very badly but we have a good time.

En décembre, nous étions au nord de la montagne de Lure, en mars, nous voilà au sud… En décembre le sommet était blanc de neige, aujourd’hui il y a un peu de neige fraîche, j’imagine qu’elle va disparaître sans tarder. Nous commençons le séjour par grand froid mais la météo doit s’arranger sans tarder.
