I see her in the spotlight, sitting in front of a grand piano, when I saw her and especially listened to for the first time, in Grenoble. It was a long time ago. She likes to be able to turn suddenly to the public: for her first concert with us she had been provided with a swivel stool. But for this first evening, so old that I even forgot what she could have sung, in this big dark room, the light on her face and her flamboyant hair, I did not suspect that we would be using the familiar form a day.

More recently, when I started taking piano lessons and she dedicated a sheet music set to me, I still did not know it.

Another time, at Pourchères, she was in the room and I was singing on stage, one of those rare occasions when I sing in public.

One day she had to come to our dining room and she did it twice. After almost five years, we had a great desire to hear her again and make her known to regulars of Kalyneries Paulifauniques.

They arrived on time and Babeth immediately began to install her move. When we listen to an artist under a vague projector, we are happy to see her in full light, we find it good. But when Babeth has spent hours developing her lights, multiplying the tests, that’s another thing! The game was worth the candle. A brutal or progressive black, a little color, discreet but varied lighting, nothing is left to chance. It has nothing to do with the vague projector, for our greatest pleasure.

Babeth has no less requirement for the sound system. Because sono is necessary, even in front of thirty-five people. In acoustics, the piano would cover the voice.

During the preparations, there is this moment when the singer speaks or sings to stop immediately and ask if it’s okay. We will put a little more or a little less piano, the settings are refined. Do not forget that when the audience is installed, the sound will be different, a final adjustment is often necessary. I particularly like it when the concert pretends to start. There is this bit of known or unknown song, then it stops. I always liked being behind the scenes.

We come and go on our side. The public is not there yet, but we are already several, settled here for the weekend or even longer.

We are well used for the installation of chairs – for once, I did not even pretend to help, I did not wear the shade of one.

I insisted a lot with our audience, the show begins at the exact time.

Her voice. Her piano.
I will say a platitude: I think she sings well. Her voice is warm, rich, nuanced … She sings and she tells us, we never tire of listening to her. She is so natural that we could forget where we are, all the preparation work upstream, to arrive at a show of this quality: we could believe that she improvises!
She is generous and passionate, she talks to us about life, about all kinds of life, that of this wolf « raplapla », that of this little blind boy or that she tells « a story of us » « stupid like a cabbage », and she wonders « How do we do / To keep the taste? »
At the piano, she fascinates me: I like to see her fingers running on the keyboard. One can take all the measure not only of her talent, but also of her training. She moves easily from one style to another – and I’m very happy with the audience who will never have started applauding before the last note. A nice complicity has been created.

The angle of attack of a subject is always original, always unforeseen. For example the story of Vanina seen through history.

It’s not easy to listen to Véronique Pestel. Or rather one must be very attentive, every word has its importance, you must not miss anything! Her lyrics are so dense and pictorial, off the beaten track, rich in meaning.
I went for a song of her that I do not think I know, « the word of the other », here are two fragments:
« Because whoever speaks is always a living enigma

Even when we apply we do not understand everything »

« And do not believe that a strong word
Can do without the heart to reach the mind »

We live intense and varied emotions. If we happen to be close to tears, laughter is also in the game.

Now, I know the origin of the word « alouas ».
Les alouas
Believe or not believe
The beautiful story
Say or not say
The words of the worst

me manque
me manque

Here are tiny fragments, precious stones which, isolated, lose a little of their brilliance of course:

Each one has his own handicap
Each one has his own handicap
A little boy said
He could not see anything
Each one has his own handicap
If you think you do not have one
I know mine

The lack
I miss time to write
I miss
I miss

After the concert, after the buffet during which I could discuss with each other, everyone has finally found his bed.

The next day, « Hello, sleep well? », drinking coffee we get back into a new day. The magic has not finished operating. Another magic is to be in contact with this great lady of the song whom we welcome the best possible but very simply.
Once all the material put back in place in the car, they left again, a little in a hurry, to go listen to Thibaud Defever and Monique Brun.

Well, we did not even go around the park finally, it’s a shame, the months of May and June are the most beautiful!

And the photos? Another little overview, June 17th
