J\u2019entends souvent dire que 2020 aura \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019ann\u00e9e la pire\u00a0: je peux comprendre cela mais je ne le ressens pas. Bien s\u00fbr, \u00eatre retrait\u00e9e devient comme une esp\u00e8ce de privil\u00e8ge, pay\u00e9e tous les mois \u00e0 ne rien faire, sans oublier que nous sommes log\u00e9s dans une maison confortable et que nous avons de l\u2019espace aussi bien dedans que dehors. Au printemps un certain calme inhabituel \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ciable, peu de voitures ou d\u2019avions, m\u00eame si les in\u00e9vitables coqs ne baissaient pas la garde.<\/strong>
\nI often hear that 2020 will have been the worst year: I can understand it but I don’t feel it. Of course, being a retiree becomes a sort of privilege, paid every month for doing nothing, not forgetting that we live in a comfortable house and have space both inside and out. During the spring some unusual calm was very appreciable, few cars or planes, although the inevitable roosters did not let their guard down.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

J\u2019ai eu la sensation que nous entrions dans une p\u00e9riode de sobri\u00e9t\u00e9, sortant de la consommation fr\u00e9n\u00e9tique – qui n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 mon truc – sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 que je partageais de gr\u00e9 ou de force avec tout le monde. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 un peu d\u00e9\u00e7ue, r\u00eavant de prises de conscience – et je sais qu\u2019il y en a eu – quand la consommation a repris, dans la fi\u00e8vre.<\/strong>
\nIt felt like we were entering a period of sobriety, emerging from the frenetic consumption – which was never my thing – sobriety that I willingly or by force shared with everyone. Dans ces moments-l\u00e0 je pensais aussi \u00e0 ceux dont la situation d\u00e9j\u00e0 dramatique ne pouvait pas empirer. Les pays abandonn\u00e9s, en guerre, les prisonniers, les enfants-soldats, partout o\u00f9 l\u2019on prend des bombes sur la tronche\u2026 Non, ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas une ann\u00e9e pire pour ceux dont le pire constitue le quotidien.<\/strong>
\nDuring those moments I also thought of those whose already dire situation could not get worse. The abandoned countries, at war, the prisoners, the child soldiers, wherever you take bombs in the face … No, it was not a worse year for those whose worst is everyday life.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\nQuand Janis m\u2019a demand\u00e9 notre adresse, je n\u2019ai rien compris, puisqu\u2019elle m\u2019\u00e9crivait\u00a0! Elle voulait notre adresse postale et non pas notre adresse courriel. J\u2019ai compris ma stupidit\u00e9 quand nous avons re\u00e7u une enveloppe avec des cartes pleines de gentillesse. Elle s\u2019est d\u00e9brouill\u00e9e pour trouver notre adresse postale.<\/strong>
\nWhen Janis asked me for our address, I didn’t understand anything, since she was writing to me! She wanted our \u00ab postal mail \u00bb, not our \u00ab mail by internet \u00bb. I understood my stupidity when we received an envelope with cards full of kindness. She managed to find our mailing address.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Bob et Janis \u00e9taient chez nous en 2013, plus tr\u00e8s jeunes d\u00e9j\u00e0. Malgr\u00e9 mes difficult\u00e9s pour comprendre l\u2019anglais (difficult\u00e9s d\u2019audition, je n\u2019ai pas assez de pratique \u00e0 l\u2019oral), j\u2019ai beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 leur pr\u00e9sence chez nous. Mais je ne comprenais malheureusement pas les plaisanteries dont Bob n\u2019\u00e9tait pas avare. Nous nous \u00e9tions s\u00e9par\u00e9s \u00e0 regret alors qu\u2019ils partaient visiter le sud de la France.<\/strong>
\nBob and Janis were with us in 2013, not very young already. Despite my difficulties in understanding English (hearing difficulties, I dont have enough oral practice), I really appreciated their presence with us. But I unfortunately did not understand the jokes that Bob was not averse to. We parted reluctantly as they left to visit the south of France.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\nTrois infirmiers, Bertrand, Herv\u00e9 et Ga\u00eblle, viennent chacun \u00e0 son tour chaque matin pour m\u2019aider \u00e0 prendre ma douche\u00a0: avec l\u2019aide de Paul, je peux tout faire, sauf enlever ou mettre le tee-shirt, geste d\u00e9licat qui doit se faire sans bouger l\u2019\u00e9paule.<\/strong>
\nThree nurses, Bertrand, Herv\u00e9 and Ga\u00eblle, each come in turn each morning to help me take my shower: with Paul\u2019s help, I can do everything except take off or put on the T-shirt, a delicate gesture that must be done without moving the shoulder.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Bertrand est notre voisin, le p\u00e8re de Ga\u00eblle aussi, \u00e0 peine plus loin. En voyant tra\u00eener un livre d\u2019Anne McCaffrey, Ga\u00eblle s\u2019est int\u00e9ress\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0la ballade de Pern\u00a0\u00bb. Hop\u00a0! Comme elle lit tr\u00e8s vite, elle a d\u00e9vor\u00e9 le premier volume. Et l\u2019a pr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 son p\u00e8re, avec mon accord enthousiaste.<\/strong>
\nBertrand is our neighbor, Ga\u00eblle\u2019s father too, barely further away. Seeing an Anne McCaffrey book lying around, Ga\u00eblle became interested in \u00ab\u00a0Dragonriders of Pern\u00a0\u00bb. Hop! As she reads very quickly, she devoured the first volume. And lent it to her father, with my enthusiastic agreement.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Son p\u00e8re s\u2019int\u00e9resse aussi aux tiny house, apr\u00e8s tout il en stationne trois ici\u00a0: une que S\u00e9b a du mal \u00e0 vendre \u00e0 cause des confinements – rassurez-vous, le prochain ne tardera pas\u00a0! Les deux autres sont habit\u00e9es l\u2019une par Lolo, l\u2019autre par S\u00e9b. Ce dernier est coinc\u00e9 ici et ne peut gu\u00e8re faire de projets de voyage, dans le contexte actuel.<\/strong>

De nouveaux liens se tissent avec ces nouvelles personnes. De l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 du Charbinat s\u2019est construit un lotissement, maintenant enti\u00e8rement habit\u00e9, sans que nous connaissions un seul de ses habitants. Cela finira peut-\u00eatre par se faire\u00a0?<\/strong>
\nNew links are forged with these new people. On the other side of Charbinat, a housing estate has been built, now fully inhabited, without our knowing a single one of its inhabitants. Maybe it will eventually happen?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
