Quand Paul et moi nous sommes install\u00e9s ici, en 1973, nous \u00e9tions terriblement isol\u00e9s. Loin de Grenoble, r\u00e9gion d\u2019origine de Paul, et o\u00f9 j\u2019avais pass\u00e9 deux ans\u00a0; moi encore plus loin de mes racines. Les amis \u00e9taient rares, le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone aussi, les hivers longs, humides et froids\u2026 \u00c0 la belle saison nos visiteurs aimaient cette campagne riante, mais nous leur parlions des grises journ\u00e9es, l\u2019hiver.<\/strong>
\nWhen Paul and I moved here in 1973, we were terribly isolated. Far from Grenoble, region of origin of Paul, and where I had spent two years; me even further from my roots. Friends were scarce, the phone too, the winters long, wet and cold\u2026 In summer our visitors loved this cheerful countryside, but we talked to them about the gray days, on winter.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s trois ans, nous avons rencontr\u00e9 Claude et Brigitte qui s\u2019installaient dans le coin. Beaucoup de choses se sont mises en place tr\u00e8s vite, et d\u2019abord les visites fr\u00e9quentes chez eux ou chez nous. Paul et Claude ont fait de la menuiserie ensemble, et je les accompagnais souvent pour l\u2019abattage du bois de chauffage.<\/strong>
\nAfter three years, we met Claude and Brigitte who were settling in the area. A lot of things fell into place very quickly, first of all the frequent visits to them or to us. Paul and Claude did carpentry together, and I often went with them to cut firewood.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nous avons mis beaucoup de choses en commun et aujourd\u2019hui encore nous pratiquons de nombreux \u00e9changes, utilisation des machines \u00e0 bois, fournitures de plants de l\u00e9gumes\u2026 L\u2019hiver dernier, j\u2019ai racont\u00e9 comment nous avons r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 du bois de chauffage. Mais nous cherchions toujours une autre formule, chacun ayant sa maison et son jardin \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 qui nous donnaient beaucoup \u00e0 faire.<\/strong>

En m\u00eame temps nos id\u00e9aux se sont affin\u00e9s\u00a0: la vie en communaut\u00e9 n\u2019\u00e9tait plus le passage obligatoire d\u2019apr\u00e8s 68, il y avait d\u2019autres options, et d\u2019abord, pour que cela puisse durer, mieux valait commencer prudemment\u00a0: on ne mettrait pas tout en commun d\u2019un coup, cela se ferait petit \u00e0 petit, au feeling.<\/strong>
\nAt the same time our ideals were refined: community life was no longer the obligatory passage after 68, there were other options, and first of all, in order to make it last, it was better to start cautiously: we would not put everything in common at once, it would be done little by little, by intuition.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nous disposons d’un terrain suffisamment grand pour que plusieurs jardiniers y produisent largement leurs besoins, nous \u00e9tions ouverts \u00e0 toutes les formules qui ne passeraient pas par l\u2019utilisation de poisons. Un ami marocain avait bien ri de nous, en nous disant que sur la surface cultiv\u00e9e pour nous deux, les Marocains feraient vivre plusieurs familles.<\/strong>

Nous avons demand\u00e9 de l\u2019aide \u00e0 des proches, Patrice et Odile ne sont pas les seuls \u00e0 avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 mis \u00e0 contribution\u00a0! Depuis presque un demi-si\u00e8cle on peut dire qu\u2019on a cherch\u00e9, et nombreuses sont les personnes \u00e0 avoir donn\u00e9 un coup de main\u2026<\/strong>
\nTo go on a trip, we sometimes loaned the house to friends for upkeep, it was a good solution, but on time. We asked for help from relatives, Patrice and Odile are not the only ones to have been involved! For almost half a century we can say that we have searched, and many people have lent a hand …\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

J\u2019ai dit, souvent – et l\u2019avenir dira si j\u2019ai raison ou tort – qu\u2019une seule paire de bras suppl\u00e9mentaire r\u00e9soudrait la plupart des probl\u00e8mes. En d\u2019autres termes\u00a0: comment partager un projet durable avec quelqu\u2019un\u00a0?<\/strong>

Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 membres de CouchSurfing \u00e0\u00a0 l\u2019\u00e9poque o\u00f9 c\u2019\u00e9tait une pratique \u00e0 \u00e9chelle humaine et avant que Airbnb n\u2019en fasse une entreprise commerciale, puis nous avons adh\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 Help X et Workaway, qui depuis 2012 nous ont permis d\u2019h\u00e9berger 87 personnes venus de tous les horizons. L\u2019aventure a \u00e9t\u00e9 fantastique. Les aides ponctuelles, bien s\u00fbr, limit\u00e9es dans le temps, mais elles ont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 une belle am\u00e9lioration et le bilan est tr\u00e8s positif.<\/strong>
\nWe were members of CouchSurfing when it was a human-scale practice and before Airbnb made it a commercial enterprise, then we joined Help X and Workaway, which since 2012 have allowed us to host 87 people from all walks of life. It has been a fantastic adventure. One-off aid, of course, limited in time, but it represented a great improvement and the results are very positive.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Cosette vient de tomber dans la retraite elle aussi. Jean-Paul et Cosette n\u2019ont pas de projet collectif, m\u00eame si nous pratiquons volontiers les \u00e9changes de service.<\/strong>
\nToday, Jean-Paul, our neighbor for several years, is on the way to retirement: when he embarks on a passionate discussion with Paul, nothing matters. Cosette has just fallen into retirement as well. Jean-Paul and Cosette do not have a collective project, although we gladly practice exchanges of service.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dans la maison voisine, Jean-Pierre et Chantal occupent la maison o\u00f9 nous avons pass\u00e9 quinze ans\u00a0: leur amiti\u00e9 chaleureuse est un plaisir permanent, sans oublier que leur pr\u00e9sence a \u00e9t\u00e9 encore plus pr\u00e9cieuse pendant le confinement. Ils nous ont grandement aid\u00e9s, d\u00e9couvrant un autre rythme de vie. Ils \u00e9taient heureux de profiter du beau temps et du calme, et pour nous qui avions d\u00fb renoncer \u00e0 recevoir des helpers cause pand\u00e9mie, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 une bonne recrue\u00a0!<\/strong>
\nIn the neighboring house, Jean-Pierre and Chantal live in the house where we spent fifteen years: their warm friendship is a permanent pleasure, without forgetting that their presence was even more precious during the confinement. They helped us greatly, discovering a different rhythm of life. They were happy to take advantage of the good weather and the calm, and for us who had had to give up receiving helpers because of the pandemic, they were a good recruit!<\/strong><\/span>
\nLe dernier arriv\u00e9, c\u2019est Laurent, l\u2019ami Lolo, rencontr\u00e9 par une petite annonce dans \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019\u00c2ge de faire\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/a>: il cherchait o\u00f9 installer sa tiny house et sa personne pour une dur\u00e9e ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAvant de ne rien d\u00e9cider, mais d\u00e8s la premi\u00e8re rencontre, nous avons sympathis\u00e9. <\/strong><\/span>
\nThe latest arrival is Laurent, friend Lolo, met by a classified ad in \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019\u00c2ge de faire\u00a0\u00bb<\/a>: he was looking for where to install his tiny house and his person for an indefinite period.<\/strong><\/span>
\nBefore deciding anything, but from the first meeting, we sympathized.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Retrait\u00e9 lui aussi, Laurent a quelques d\u00e9cennies au compteur. Il r\u00eavait de mener d\u00e9sormais une existence plus tranquille et \u00eatre ma\u00eetre de son temps. <\/strong><\/span>
\nRetired too, Laurent has a few decades on the odometer. He dreamed of leading henceforth a quieter existence and to control\u00a0 his time.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Il est pour nous en quelque sorte la pierre qui manquait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9difice. Nous nous entendons tr\u00e8s bien, les quelques heures hebdomadaires qu\u2019il nous donne nous sont pr\u00e9cieuses. Ensemble pour un repas, pour bavarder, pour regarder une \u00e9mission, ou chacun de son c\u00f4t\u00e9 en toute ind\u00e9pendance. Et pour une balade !<\/strong><\/span>
\nIn a way, he is for us the missing stone in the building. We get along very well, the few hours a week he gives us are precious to us. Together for a meal, to chat, to watch a program, or each on their own independently. And for a ride!\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Pourquoi ai-je parl\u00e9 de Village (avec une majuscule sioupla\u00eet\u00a0!) et non de hameau\u00a0? Parce qu\u2019il s\u2019agit presque d\u2019une entit\u00e9 vivante, pas seulement d\u2019une juxtaposition d\u2019habitats et de personnes. Parce que nous nous connaissons. Parce que le lien social, c\u2019est la vraie vie.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhy did I say Village (with a capital letter please!) and not hamlet? Because it is almost a living entity, not just a juxtaposition of dwellings and people. Because we know each other.
