Claire est n\u00e9e en 1886. Eug\u00e8ne avait treize ans de plus qu’elle, et j’ignore quand elle l’a connu. \u00c0 quel \u00e2ge s’est-elle prise en photo dans le miroir ?<\/span><\/p>\n

Claire was born in 1886. Eugene was thirteen years older than her, and I don’t know when she knew him. How old was she when she took photos of herself in front of the mirror ?<\/strong>

Je l’ignore aussi, mais ce qui est certain, c’est qu’\u00e0 l’\u00e9poque de la photo, Eug\u00e8ne et Jeanne \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 les heureux parents d’Henry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still I don’tknow, but it is sure that the photo was done when Eug\u00e8ne and Jeanne were already the happy parents of Henry.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

November 1914: I think that I recognize Eug\u00e8ne’s habits, writing the date on the photo. Maybe that Eug\u00e8ne already knew his future second wife. Maybe that he added the date later …

Le coeur de Jeanne a \u00e9t\u00e9 bris\u00e9 quand Henry a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 sur le front en 1918. Elle est morte peu de temps apr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

Jeanne’s heart was broken when Henry was killed on 1918 during the first world war. She died a few time later. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Plus tard, Eug\u00e8ne a \u00e9pous\u00e9 Claire. Ils ont eu une fille quand Eug\u00e8ne avait 52 ans, puis un fils quand il avait 54 ans, quelques ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s l’armistice. Il les a nomm\u00e9s… Jeanne et Henry.<\/p>\n

Later, Eug\u00e8ne married with Claire. They had a daughter when Eug\u00e8ne was 52, and a son when he was 54, a few years after the armistice. He called them … Jeanne and Henry.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Eug\u00e8ne a conserv\u00e9 beaucoup de documents. Dans une encyclop\u00e9die Larousse, \u00e0 la page de Pierrefonds o\u00f9 est mort Henry \u00ab\u00a0premier\u00a0\u00bb, il a plac\u00e9 l’histoire de la mort de ce fils.<\/p>\n

Eug\u00e8ne kept a lot of documents. In an encyclopedia Larousse, he placed the story of the death of his son, at the page about Pierrefonds, that is the place where Henry \u00ab\u00a0the first\u00a0\u00bb died.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Je suis la fille d’Henry : Claire et Eug\u00e8ne \u00e9taient mes grands-parents. Eug\u00e8ne avait 79 ans quand je suis n\u00e9e, et Claire \u00e9tait morte. Je crois qu’elle avait 62 ans, et sa vie avait \u00e9t\u00e9 difficile.<\/p>\n

I am Henry’s daughter : Claire and Eug\u00e8ne were my grandparents. Eug\u00e8ne was 79 years old when I was born, and Claire was died. I think that she was 62 years old, ans her life had been dificult. <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

J’ai peu connu mon grand-p\u00e8re, cet homme vieux, us\u00e9, \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire fatigu\u00e9e… Mais je lui suis infiniment reconnaissante d’avoir gard\u00e9 les courriers, les photos, que je peux consulter maintenant. Je peux lire les lettres qu’il \u00e9crivait, m\u00eame une quand il \u00e9tait enfant.

I knew just a little my grandfather, that old, tired man, whose memory was reduced … But I am grateful a lot because him having kept the letters, photos, that I can see now.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> I can read the letters that he wrote, even one when he was a child.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Je pense qu’il faut penser \u00e0 laisser des traces pour les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes. J’ai la chance d’avoir ces quelques lettres, ces quelques photos tr\u00e8s anciennes. Un dessin de mon p\u00e8re quand il avait quatre ans. Ses premiers courriers \u00e0 ses parents, d’une \u00e9criture enfantine. Un devoir d’italien que mon grand-p\u00e8re a trouv\u00e9, roul\u00e9 en boule dans la chambre de mon p\u00e8re – son fils, adolescent – et annot\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that we have to think off letting traces for the future generations. I am lucky, having those few letters, those very old photos. A drawing that my father draw when he was four years old. His first letters to his parents, childish handwriting. A half destroyed sheet of paper with an Italian exercise that my grandfather found in my father’s room – his son, beeing teenager – and annotated.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Les courriers d\u00e9sol\u00e9s de Claire \u00e0 Eug\u00e8ne quand celui-ci \u00e9tait en d\u00e9placement. Sa joie anticip\u00e9e quand elle pr\u00e9parait son retour !<\/span><\/p>\n

Sad letters that Claire wrote while Eug\u00e8ne was travelling for his job. And how happy she was before his coming back!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

La vie est la m\u00eame, d’une certaine fa\u00e7on : difficile pour beaucoup de gens. Pour eux, pour nous.<\/span><\/p>\n

In some way, life is the same for most of people : difficult. For them, for us.
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Eug\u00e8ne, Claire, auriez-vous accept\u00e9 que je parle de vous ici ? Je le fais avec le plus grand respect. Avez-vous pens\u00e9 un seul instant, quand vous lisiez avidement le courrier de l’aim\u00e9, que quelqu’un aurait envie de partager un peu de vous avec les autres ? De publier ces mots de tendresse qui n’avaient qu’un seul destinataire ?<\/span><\/p>\n

Eug\u00e8ne, Claire, would you agree my talking here about you? I do this with the utmost repect. Did you think only once, when you read avidly the mail from your love, that someone would want to share a little about yourself with others? To publish these tender words that had only one recipient?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
