It’s been a month since we got back from our last getaway, it’s time to talk about something else: it’s over, at least until our next trip, from Provence, Banon, Bleuet.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Pourtant c\u2019est au Bleuet que Paul a d\u00e9couvert un livre d\u2019Anne Cuneo. Paul avait \u00e9t\u00e9 en contact avec elle bien avant son d\u00e9c\u00e8s en 2015\u00a0; il avait r\u00e9dig\u00e9 une chronique sur \u00ab\u00a0le ma\u00eetre de Garamond\u00a0\u00bb,<\/a> et Anne l\u2019avait remerci\u00e9. \u00ab Le ma\u00eetre de Garamond \u00bb est un roman historique. Le ma\u00eetre, c\u2019est Antoine Augereau, pendu, et br\u00fbl\u00e9 avec ses livres, en 1534, en plein essor du protestantisme. Religions et imprimerie sont li\u00e9s. Garamond, \u00e9l\u00e8ve d\u2019Augereau, se consacre \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de caract\u00e8res d\u2019imprimerie plus lisibles que le gothique, afin de rendre la lecture accessible \u00e0 un plus grand nombre. Au contraire, l\u2019\u00e9glise cherche \u00e0 asseoir son autorit\u00e9 en maintenant les gens dans l\u2019ignorance, en les soumettant par la peur. Ce n\u2019est pas un hasard si Luther et Calvin ont voulu r\u00e9former l\u2019\u00e9glise. <\/strong>
Yet it was at Bleuet that Paul discovered a book by Anne Cuneo. Paul had been in contact with her long before her death in 2015; he had written a column on \u00ab\u00a0le ma\u00eetre de Garamond\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0the master of Garamond\u00a0\u00bb<\/a>, and Anne had thanked him. \u00ab Le ma\u00eetre de Garamond \u00bb is a historical novel. The master is Antoine Augereau, hanged, and burned with his books, in 1534, in full swing of Protestantism. Religions and printing are linked. Garamond, a pupil of Augereau, devoted himself to creating print types that were more legible than Gothic, in order to make reading accessible to a greater number of people. On the contrary, the church seeks to establish its authority by keeping people in ignorance, by subduing them through fear. It is no coincidence that Luther and Calvin wanted to reform the church.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The book found at Le Bleuet is the autobiography of Anne Cuneo: \u00ab portrait de l\u2019auteur en femme ordinaire \u00bb, \u00ab portrait of the author as an ordinary woman \u00bb. The title already excites me. I like \u00ab ordinary \u00bb people, I like being ordinary myself. It’s not vile, it’s not low. It is a compliment when I say such a person is ordinary.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Anne est n\u00e9e en France de parents italiens en 1936 : \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, ses parents se sont sentis suffisamment ind\u00e9sirables pour retourner en Italie. La guerre a \u00e9clat\u00e9. Anne was born in France from Italian parents in 1936: at that time, her parents felt unwanted enough to return to Italy. War broke out. His father worked for Germany, it was common knowledge, in reality he sabotaged the work and provided goods that were soon to break. At the liberation, at the time of arbitrary settling of accounts, this resistance fighter was assassinated and they never knew if it was by the resistance fighters or by the fascists.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Anne a connu une enfance terrible, de grandes souffrances, la faim et le froid en permanence. Mon enfance a moi a \u00e9t\u00e9 bien plus paisible, pourtant, d\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res pages, je vois que nous avons en commun les bases sur lesquelles nous nous sommes construites : \u00ab Un enfant, \u00e7a ne comprend rien \u00bb, mes parents comme les siens en \u00e9taient convaincus. Anne had a terrible childhood, great suffering, constant hunger and cold. My own childhood was much more peaceful, however, from the first pages, I see that we have in common the bases on which we built ourselves: \u00ab A child, that does not understand anything \u00bb, my parents, like her, were convinced. I do not know at what age I understood that I did not have to intervene on certain subjects. It was not just a question of giving priority to adults to speak, a rule that should not be broken. We also had to pretend to be deaf, because some things were not for us. We had to make adults believe that \u00ab all this \u00bb was of no interest to us, that we didn’t understand, by hiding our curiosity and our desire to understand from them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

J\u2019\u00e9tais rousse (un peu moins aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est devenu plus fonc\u00e9 avant de virer au blanc). Ma m\u00e8re \u00e9tait folle de joie d\u2019avoir un enfant roux. J\u2019ai terriblement souffert de mon aspect physique. Combien de fois ai-je \u00e9t\u00e9 interpel\u00e9e par un \u00ab Poil de Carotte \u00bb narquois ? Et je ne cite pas les autres m\u00e9chancet\u00e9s, beaucoup plus cruelles.<\/strong>
Anne was red-haired: in the religious establishments where she was locked up, it was the color of the devil, we must not let the Evil One dominate this sinner. I was redheaded (a little less today, it got darker before turning white). My mother was overjoyed to have a ginger child. I suffered terribly from my physical aspect. How many times have I been challenged by a smirking \u00ab Poil de Garotte \u00bb (\u00ab carrot hair \u00bb) ? And I do not quote the other wickedness, much more cruel.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n

Je suis persuad\u00e9e que ma personnalit\u00e9 s\u2019est forg\u00e9e en grande partie \u00e0 cause du regard des autres : je n\u2019ai jamais eu une estime vraiment bonne de moi-m\u00eame. J\u2019ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 rebelle, provocatrice. Je suis quelqu\u2019un qui h\u00e9site trop, c\u2019est la raison (une des raisons, je ne sais pas ?) pour laquelle je ne suis pas devenue romanci\u00e8re.<\/strong>
I am convinced that my personality was forged in large part because of the gaze of others: I have never had a really good self-esteem. I have always been rebellious, provocative. I’m someone who hesitates too much, that’s the reason (one of the reasons, I don’t know?) why I didn’t become a novelist.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Anne crevait de manque d\u2019amour. Elle pioche dans sa m\u00e9moire pour en rapporter toutes les bribes d\u2019amour qu\u2019elle peine \u00e0 rassembler, et elle ne trouve pas grand-chose. Elle suppose que si son p\u00e8re avait v\u00e9cu, elle serait entr\u00e9e en conflit avec cet homme tr\u00e8s autoritaire en entrant dans l\u2019adolescence, mais il est mort. Sa m\u00e8re n\u2019\u00e9tait pas faite pour avoir des enfants, Anne et son fr\u00e8re Roger se sont sentis abandonn\u00e9s.<\/strong>
Anne was dying of lack of love. She digs into her memory to bring back all the scraps of love she struggles to collect, and she doesn’t find much. She assumes that if her father had lived, she would have come into conflict with this very authoritarian man as she entered adolescence, but he is dead. Her mother was not made to have children, Anne and her brother Roger felt abandoned.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n

Pendant son enfance, Anne a pass\u00e9 des ann\u00e9es bien trop nombreuses dans des \u00e9tablissements religieux o\u00f9 le message d\u2019amour de J\u00e9sus n\u2019avait pas pass\u00e9 la porte. Elle y a appris \u00e0 mentir au point de ne plus pouvoir se d\u00e9faire de cette manie, qui d\u2019abord l\u2019a prot\u00e9g\u00e9e mais qui est devenue un d\u00e9faut quand elle n\u2019en avait plus besoin.<\/strong>
As a child, Anne spent far too many years in religious institutions where Jesus’ message of love did not pass through the door. There she learned to lie to the point of not being able to get rid of this mania, which at first protected her but which became a fault when she no longer needed it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Son r\u00e9cit donne tous les d\u00e9tails du m\u00e9canisme qui fait que l\u2019on devient qui l\u2019on devient. C\u2019est un portrait remarquable et exemplaire. Il me rappelle les avertissements de Tomkiewicz, ce p\u00e9dopsychiatre hors du commun, h\u00e9las disparu, dont les travaux pourraient nous \u00eatre tr\u00e8s utiles pour affronter notre quotidien. Il parlait de \u00ab gauchissement \u00bb, le terme me para\u00eet explicite. Les aspirations saines et naturelles de Anne se sont heurt\u00e9es contre un mur o\u00f9 elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 disloqu\u00e9es, la laissant incapable de s\u2019estimer elle-m\u00eame, ni m\u00eame de se conna\u00eetre, au point d\u2019\u00e9pouser sans l\u2019aimer le premier qui lui manifestait de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat.<\/strong>
Her story gives all the details of the mechanism that makes one become who one becomes. It is a remarkable and exemplary portrait. It reminds me of the warnings of Tomkiewicz, this extraordinary child psychiatrist, unfortunately deceased, whose work could be very useful to us in facing our daily lives. He was talking about \u00ab warping \u00bb, the term seems self-explanatory to me. Anne’s healthy and natural aspirations have come up against a wall where they have been dislocated, leaving her incapable of esteeming herself, or even of knowing herself, to the point of marrying without loving the first who showed her some interest.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n

Le petit enfant a besoin d\u2019amour et de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, les deux \u00e9tant inextricablement li\u00e9s. C\u2019est ce qui le rendra intelligent et fort. Anne a d\u00fb se d\u00e9brouiller sans l\u2019un ni l\u2019autre. Pour moi, la situation n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi tragique, mais mes parents manquaient de temps, et on peut imaginer que quelques notions \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires de psychologie leur auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 utiles. <\/strong>
The small child needs love and security, the two being inextricably linked. This is what will make him smart and strong. Anne had to make do without either. For me, the situation has never been so tragic, but my parents were short on time, and one can imagine that a few basic notions of psychology would have been useful to them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

We saw this remarkable singer several times on stage, I was able to exchange a few words with him and above all, I admire his immense talent. He leaves more than two hundred songs evoking his country or his travels, and all of this is steeped in humanity and poetry.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Il a racont\u00e9 dans des romans tr\u00e8s r\u00e9alistes les luttes qui ont eu lieu \u00e0 Sainte-Croix, o\u00f9 il a pass\u00e9 presque toute son existence.<\/strong>
We tried to console ourselves a little by watching one of his interviews. If he was a happy man, he felt that we missed everything because we are in a period where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
